Big, fast banksia with orange flower spikes up to 40 cm long through autumn and winter.

A cross between heath banksia (Banksia ericifolia) and hairpin banksia (Banksia spinulosa), selected for its exceptionally long flower spikes. It makes a large, dense screen and feeds honeyeaters through the cooler months.

Planting and care

Grown from
Cuttings

Planting

Full sun or light shade with room to spread 3 m or more. Plant on a mound in heavy soil.

Pruning

Tip prune young plants to encourage branching. Cut spent cones or picked flowers just behind the spike, leaving leaves on the stem; it doesn't regrow well from bare wood.

Care

Use a low-phosphorus native fertiliser, if any. Water through dry spells in the first year.
